My Pet-Parenting Fail: Barking
No one is perfect. I'll just start with that, haha!
This is the first of my mini series over some of my pet parenting FAILS which happened to yours truly!
A quick story explaining my reasonings to teach/allow my dog to do what I did and why that was a fail for me-
I adopted Oliver when I was 22 years old, living in a condo-apartment next to Aggieville (this is where all of the college bars are located in Manhattan, KS). Now, I figured this was the perfect place to live, close to campus where I worked and walking distance to my favorite local restaurants and bars. I didn't think about all of the 3 am alley fights I would hear almost every night.
*Ollie's back story on his size is for another post, but he's HUGE!*
Overall he was very easy to train, he knows "quiet" but he would hear the fighting going on and start growling, which was comforting knowing he would protect me if something were to ever happen, so I never deterred his attention or corrected his reaction during those moments. This has led to annoying and slightly inappropriate guard dog behavior, it is embarrassing to say the least but we are making improvements. So if you live in the Holdrege area, walk by my house and Ollie is intimidatingly barking and pacing the fence as you walk by, fear not- he's never gone after anyone! But apologies for the ruckus and noise!
(Not to mention, him being part Great Pyrenees, it IS in his instincts to protect his territory and humans.)
